Mud Boy Analysis

The opening scene is fades from a black screen to the name of the pictures ‘promotion pictures’ meanwhile non diegetic sound of a low droning is quietly introduced. The next scene rapidly changes flashing the production names; remaining a black background with plain bold white text. The non-diegetic sound hastily gets louder creating a tense atmosphere. The loud burst could is portraying warning to the viewer for the upcoming events. The black background continues to linger as the director and title of the film emerge after each other onto the screen; the same bold white text is used however for the title of the film capitals are used to show us this is the title of the film and in order for in to stand out to the watcher. During these two scene changes the music is slowed down and slowly drowned out and merged with the sound of two characters voices arguing which is digetic sound but we cant see any characters yet this could make the situation seem surreal as if the voices or the music is going on inside someones head or in a past experience. The black background cross fades into an establishing shot of a back garden which presents the setting of the film. The house portrays the family is working class , the garden is fairly messy and filled with overgrown plants suggesting neglect and hectic lifestyle. The main focus is a spade which appears to be close up and therefore looks the biggest thing in the image and steals the viewers attention. It portrays to the reader that there is a young chid in the film and automatically gives the character innocence before we even discover anything about them. The fact there is only one child's spade to be seen indicates they are an only child or intact just lonely. The spade is the first object the viewer sees which indicates to them this is a main thing in the stories up coming events which leaves the audience curious about what it is used for.The shot merges closer to the house and then It flashed into a close up of a pair of hands holding a game console. The camera them looks up at the child holding it in close up, the background behind her is white and blurred to draw your focus onto the child as the main subject of the scene. The digetic sound of the arguing of two characters continues but we still dont no who or why. Revealing the little girls makes the audience curious about whether she is in danger due to the arguing around her. The shots begin to change quite frequently two shot of the little girl talking to her mother the pace this happens is used to indicate the danger and tense atmosphere and the severity of the argument and how it is escalatinghis as an audience it makes me feel disheartened for her to see the environment she lives in.

We see a mid-shot of Mina in the garden playing with her two dolls pretending to be Eddie and her mum Laura. In this scene, the spectators emotions are evoked by hearing the things that Mina are repeating that she hears from her mum and her boyfriend when they are arguing. “You did, you bastard and I hate you” this quotation shows the atrocious words that she is hearing at an early age. This immediately evokes the spectator’s emotions because she is being exposed to s lot of things, for example bad language.

There is high angle of Mina digging a hole in order for her to bury her two dolls. As she is digging the hole we see a close up of a hand. This intrigues and horrifies the spectators at the same time horrifies because we want to see who is the person buried and how is the person related to the young girl Mina. There is also a use of high angle which makes Mina look vulnerable when she is cleaning the hand of a unknown person, since the shot is restricted because we don’t know who is buried down under. By Mina cleaning the hand make the spectators shocked and start panicking because as a young girl it doesn’t seem like she is being overwhelmed by what she is seeing. This makes the spectators wonder if she knows who is buried under the sand.

In the film the spectator emotions are being evoked differently, for example at the end of the film, we see a two shot of Mina and the policewoman and Mina asks for biscuits. We also see a long shot of a ghost of Eddie asking her sister if he could get a biscuit too. This makes the spectator emotional because of the chemistry between the two of them and also the fact that Jamie still thinks he is still alive.

In the film the emotions are evoked in different ways and the emotions that are evoked makes the spectators relate to the film. This also makes the spectators enjoy the film because they are feeling like they are relating with what’s going on in the film.lthough it leaves the audience open and guessing as to what the offence is and why the police are there. However at the end of the movie in the final part, it is uncovered that the aggressive father is being taken away, which essentially answers all the questions the audience may have had throughout the film. The structure follows a three act structure whereby there is some sort of equilibruim which gets distrupted this iswhere the climax takes place. By the end there is a new equilibrum.
